Hi PH,
I made the Tactical Time Blocker as a way to keep myself on track throughout my day.
I have ADHD so it’s easy for me to lose track of time and lose focus on what important tasks I need to accomplish.
The daily highlight is an idea borrowed from the excellent book, Make Time. The concept is that you start your day with a declared highlight (this may or may not be work related) and you make room for it in your schedule. This way you make sure that your day will always have _something_ of value that you’ve accomplished (or at least dedicated time toward).
The adaptive time blocking is a concept by Cal Newport in the book Deep Work. You start by writing down what you think your day will look like. Then you track your day and adjust as needed, with a third column for any new upcoming appointments that get scheduled. After you’ve completed a day, you can look back and see how close your schedule matches, and adjust accordingly once you start to determine how long certain types of projects or meetings actually take.
I’ve tried time tracking apps in the past but they’ve never seemed to work for me. This template is always within view since it’s physically on my desk, and even though I love technology, I find the low-tech option here really works for me.
I hope it works for you as well, please let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Jesse J. Anderson
