“
Last year I started working with data from Earth observation satellites. One day in late 2020 when the California sky was red with smoke, I got the idea to do an app about fire spotting. I released Firespot 1 at the tail end of last fire season, with data from the ESA’s infrared fire detection satellites. This year I expanded the app to include data from the NASA and NOAA’s satellites, as well as fire management and perimeter data from fire departments around the U.S. The app is free, with a paid alerts service. Set an inner and outer radius of interest, and Firespot will notify you when fires start or spread in your area.
